The Garmin Forerunner 45 specifications include two versions: the 42 mm 45 and 39 mm 45s there both identical other than the wrist size and there great entry level smartwatches in Garmin’s Forerunner series. With Body Battery you can monitor your energy levels.
They come in two colors – the 39 mm version can be picked up in white, iris or black, while the 42 mm version comes in lava red and black. The screen is rounded and has five buttons for easy navigation and an always on display. Connect IQ faces are also supported which is a very nice new feature on a Garimin watch at this price.
With structured workouts you can download or create custom workouts on Garmin connect or use Garmin coach to help prepare for your next 10k. Either way there’s a multitude of apps available to cover most workouts. The watch is waterproof to 5ATM standard but swimming in not supported.
The wrist-based rate monitor can be a little hit and miss with strength training but is still definitely acceptable at the selling price, it does also support syncing with a heart rate strap and syncs via ANT+ and Bluetooth.
Similar smartwatches in the same price range included the Samsung Galaxy Watch Active and the Apple Watch Series 3 — however the Transflective memory-in-pixel display and GPS, Galileo and GLONASS global positioning capabilities makes the Forerunner 45 a more appealing option for outdoor running.
Workout readiness – The Forerunner 45/45s definitely shines and is packed with a lot of features usually only available on more premium watches by Garmin. The battery life bolsters an impressive 13 hours of performance with GPS enabled and 7 days of general usage. Although not ideal for swimming it offers all you’ll need for any gym and running workout and all at a great price.
